The definite guide for a life of health and wellness, part 1
In these modern times of stress and over-stimulation it’s more important than ever to take time for ourselves in the midst of chaos. Here at Origins Eco-Lodge in Costa Rica we want to help you achieve a better lifestyle and become the best version of you, this is why we are bringing you the ultimate guide for a life of health and wellness, because even though you might not feel sick now, you still need to invest time and effort in maintaining that feeling both physically and mentally.
The dimensions of wellness
The National Wellness Institute in the United States mentions six dimensions of wellness: physical, social, intellectual, emotional, occupational and spiritual. These were thought up in 1976 by Dr. Bill Hetler, co-founder of the Institute, and they can be seen as a path towards a life of wholeness in all of its aspects.
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT
As we mentioned before, a healthy lifestyle strives for a comprehensive state of wellness, so let’s start with a very important part of the physical dimension: nutrition.
We have heard it countless times: You are what you eat. You are obviously not turning into pizza anytime soon, but your insides, that part of your body you can’t see, is absorbing every nutrient —or lack thereof— from the meals you eat.
It is always important to watch the food you eat, it’s not only about cutting fats or sweets. A healthy lifes- tyle includes a balanced diet, avoids processed food and prefers natural and organic products.
In our on-site restaurant we offer a delicious variety of dishes thought up by our Michelin-star chef and cooked with locally-sourced produce, aiding the local economy.
GET MOVING
Another big part of the physical dimension of wellness is physical activity. A combination of eating well and good exercise habits will help you get closer to a state of wellness.
As you work towards building flexibility, strength and endurance you will also get to know your body better and learn how to communicate with it and, most important, how to know what your body wants to tell you.
The physical benefits of looking good and feeling terrific most often lead to the psychological benefits of enhanced self-esteem, self-control, determination and a sense of direction.
One of the best physical activities to practice for wellness is yoga: this activity helps you move your body and at the same time work on your inner self. At Origins we offer yoga classes by wellness experts in our beautiful yoga dome surrounded by vegetation and the sounds of nature.
DON’T IGNORE YOUR EMOTIONS
Another dimension of wellness is the emotional part. We sometimes tend to forget about our inner self and get lost in a sea of outer stimulus, this happens more often now that we can binge-watch a show on the Internet or scroll endlessly through any social media page.
The emotional part of wellness makes us aware of our feelings and emotions and helps you recognize what are you feeling? Why are you feeling that way? And ultimately, what is really causing that?
A great way to get in touch with your emotions is to disconnect from the modern world for a while. Doesn’t have to be for a whole year, a simple meditation for a few minutes can help you start in this path.
GET OUT THERE
This year has been tough on all of us, especially for those who love social interaction. But you don’t have to be an extrovert to work on the social dimension of wellness.
This dimension is all about building community. You might think you have the friends and family part covered, but it’s not only about going on once a week or meeting for a relative’s wedding every year, it’s about engaging in these relationships and helping one another.
re consistent with your beliefs and you start being more true to yourself, which is the ultimate goal.
.
One of the best ways to pamper yourself while on this path of discovery is traveling and opening your mind while you forget about the everyday chaos. At Origins we love to bring personalized attention to our guests and we offer delicious, healthy and locally-sourced meals as well as a great yoga program for those who want a total immersion in this discipline.
