Origins pledges to eliminate single-use plastics from the guest experience
As a member of Accor and a responsible tourism provider in Bijagua, Origins Luxury Lodge has agreed to participate in the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative, an initiative spearheaded by UNEP, the World Tourism Organization, and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
What is the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative?
To put it in perspective, since plastic became widely utilized approximately six decades ago, the rate of mass production has resulted in 8.3 billion metric tonnes of plastic pollution. Even though its negative effects on the environment are becoming increasingly well-known, plastic production is expected to grow over the next 20 years. When you consider these factors together, it’s obvious that the world is in the midst of a plastic catastrophe. The United Nations has called the widespread use of disposable plastics one of the gravest threats to the planet’s ecosystems in the contemporary era.
Any disposable plastic item designed for a single use before being discarded is considered “single-use.” Everything you can think of that’s plastic: meals, welcome gifts, takeout containers, glasses, laundry bags, water bottles, throwaway dinnerware, toiletries, slippers, pencils, etc., and plastic keycards. When possible, we will suggest more eco-friendly alternatives to plastic for each product, and we’ll factor in life cycle assessments to ensure that our recommendations actually help the environment.
“We’re dedicated to doing our part in addressing the root cause of this massive environmental issue—single-use plastic.”
